In this case, Medisort worked alongside an international integrated facilities management (FM) organisation who manage properties, assets and workspaces, delivering the services that matter to their clients. Consequently, they set and expect exceptionally high standards from the partners they carefully choose to work alongside them.
The client NHS Foundation Trust provides specialist mental health, substance misuse and learning disability services across their county and further afield. Medisort were selected to provide a compliant, reliable collection, treatment, recycling and disposal service to the client as the approved, trusted supplier to the FM.
They concluded that we have the best people, the most expertise and the latest technology to support an outstanding FM service, helping the client to sustainably manage their organisation. A key requirement in this case was to provide an individual and personal approach and we make sure they get that. Understanding what’s important only comes from experience and we’ve got bags of it in our area of specialism, healthcare waste solutions.
We offered support with a can-do attitude and fresh thinking along the way. We were focused to help achieve the goals of the entire supply chain – which were to reduce costs, risks and CO2 emissions, and to assist the client to create a high quality environment for their people, save time and comply with regulations.
Medisort provides professional healthcare waste management services to the forty seven collection points across the whole of the county encompassing bin exchange, bin service and individual items collections. We provide a flexible and responsive collection service with frequencies varying from site to site and ranging from twice weekly, weekly, fortnightly, monthly to as and when required. The demands of the client are very fluid, which means our response has to accommodate short notice changes in a seamless manner.
The contract has been based around a focus on delivering innovation and expertise to improve service delivery, involving all members of the FM team and members of the client team to deliver these improvements. As many as one in four of us will have some sort of mental health problem in our lives, from stress and worry, to more serious conditions that can affect the way we live. We are proud to be helping the client provide world class, specialist care by taking their healthcare waste problems away, meaning they have one less thing to worry about themselves.
Medisort exceeded all expectations with its innovative mobile technology and by providing training, literature and expert advice freely available as and when required. This consultative approach has proven critical in achieving the cost and risk reduction objectives on the contract.
To address the challenge of CO2 reduction, Medisort introduced single use instrument (SUI) sterilisation and recycling.
To help improve the working environment for the county Partnership, Medisort has, within the contract, removed static wheeled bins from sites no longer requiring them and moved bins from one site to different locations at the Trust’s request. Once again, meeting the flexibility demands of the customer within our service.
The contract had a very short start-‐up period. Normally, contracts of this complexity would require thirteen weeks to source, administer and deliver the stock and service requirements of the client. Due to unforeseen delays in contract drafting, we had ten working days for implementation and managed to install all external bins in time prior to start of the contract, which entailed multi vehicle drops at short notice where our staff worked extra hours to ensure the client enjoyed a trouble free transition from one contractor to Medisort. This was duly noted by the Trust as they had a seamless start to the contract.
We are working with the FM to introduce recycling into the current contract to enhance the client’s compliance with the waste hierarchy, whereas the previous suppliers have been content to just collect and dispose. The client is particularly appreciative as they are keen to demonstrate corporate responsibility and to do so, coupled with cost saving, is a double bonus.
Medisort aims to significantly reduce the carbon footprint for the contract by keeping the waste within the county in which it is treated. We are engaged in the early stages of trials to use flock from our autoclaves post sterilisation as a fuel for a local Combined Heat and Power facility. If this proves fruitful, we will remove all the waste from landfill, a major goal for us, the Trust and the FM.
Through the MOPS technology we employ, we routinely generate electronic consignment notes which capture a digital signature via a smart mobile application. This allows not only the reduction in the use of paper and its associated environmental benefits but also captures the fully completed part E section of the consignment note, which gives the producer instant notification of acceptance by the treatment or disposal site. This process normally takes up to 4 months to receive via the quarterly returns from the disposal site, a process which now happens within hours.
In recognition of our outstanding efficiency and reliability, Medisort has been asked to supply the consumable items for this contract in addition to the service provision. This brings additional benefits as we control more of the total healthcare waste solution.
